The Technology Transfer Network announces the joining of Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC) as its newest Associate Member

Singapore, 20 October 2009 – The Technology Transfer Network (TTN) announced today at the
inaugural Innovation and Enterprise Week (IEW) conference 2009 that the Network has extended its commercial reach to add to its fold the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC) as an Associate Member. With the joining of SICC, the TTN, founded in February 2008, has twenty-five (25) members across Asia, United States, Canada, Europe and New Zealand.

As an Associate Member, SICC will be able to participate in enhanced collaboration with the network of TTN members to share best practices, leverage expertise and resources, and collaborate on networking opportunities to enhance technology transfer to the industry globally.

Joining TTN provides SICC members an opportunity to look at emerging technologies on a regular and coordinated basis. The interaction at TTN level also serves as a platform where SICC members can participate and contribute in providing feedback of industry needs. Mr Phillip Overmyer, the Chief Executive of the SICC, added, “We are honoured to be invited as the first International Chamber of Commerce to join the TTN as its Associate Member. With our 800 strong membership where 60 percent are foreign-owned companies with headquarters overseas, and 40 percent are locally-owned companies, we believe that this alliance will enable SICC member companies and TTN’s members to collectively explore innovative ideas and foster strategic business partnerships both in the local and international markets.”

Mr Boon Swan Foo, Executive Chairman of Exploit Technologies and the Chairman of the Technology Transfer Network said, “The TTN warmly welcomes SICC onboard our team. I am confident that SICC’s industry outreach and relevance will expand TTN’s perspective.” SICC will participate in the upcoming IEW Conference 2009 as a supporting partner. IEW 2009 Conference is taking place October 20-22, 2009 at Biopolis, Singapore.
About Singapore International Chamber of Commerce

The Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC), established in 1837, is the oldest
private sector representative organization in the Republic of Singapore. It is also unique in the
local context in that membership is open to companies of all races and nationalities, so long as
they have a place of business in Singapore.

The Chamber provides a respected and effective voice for the business community in
Singapore. It is accepted by the Government as representing the multinational investment
interests in the Republic. At the same time, the Chamber’s substantial local membership gives
it firm roots in Singapore. Currently, over 40 nationalities are represented in the Chamber
membership, which encompasses both multinational corporations with operations in Singapore
and locally-owned business enterprises, Singaporean companies form the largest single national
group (42%), followed by American (14%), Japanese (8%) and German (8%).

The high credibility and status enjoyed by the Chamber give it access to key areas of
government where policy decisions are made. Not only is the Chamber regularly consulted on
matters that have a bearing on the interests of the private sector, such as draft legislation and
new or revised government rules and regulations, but it also has members on numerous
government advisory committees and statutory boards.

The Chamber constantly monitors and, where appropriate, speaks up on issues or
developments of concern to its members. The Chamber also has an on-going dialogue with the
government and statutory bodies through regular meetings and consultation. Here again,
diverse issues that affect the private sector are regularly raised for clarification and possible
remedial action by government departments and statutory bodies.

In these ways, the Chamber combines its “watch-dog” role with that of acting as a catalyst for
the improvement of the business and investment environment in Singapore.

Singapore, 31 August 2009 – A*STAR Chairman Mr Lim Chuan Poh will be putting the spotlight on “Engineering a Sustainable Future” when he presents his Lecture during the 3rd IES Charles Rudd Distinguished Lecture (CRDL). Organised by The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) annually, the CRDL is designed to be a platform for distinguished speakers to give their take on the latest science and technological developments in Singapore and the world. Past speakers include SPRING Singapore Chairman Mr Philip Yeo and ex-EDB Chairman Mr Lim Siong Guan.

Mr Lim will also present the IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards 2009, given annually to outstanding engineers or companies, to seven recipients. The PEAA recipients will be holding an exhibition of their winning projects before the Lecture. Please refer to Appendix 1 for more details on the PEAA.

On this occasion, IES and Exploit Technologies will sign a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a strategic collaboration under the Angel Investment Management (AIM) initiative. This collaboration serves to enhance and accelerate Angel networking activity, and enable startups to have greater access to Angel
investors in Singapore and the region.

Under the new partnership, IES and Exploit Technologies will collaborate to organise Angel networking events and undertake joint marketing activities to promote investments in local startups.

IES will set up an “IES Angels Roundtable” to provide the opportunities for its members to jointly invest in high-growth companies and promising start-ups and a platform to network and link up with the Angels community. The Roundtable will be chaired by Er. Edwin Khew, CEO and Managing Director, IUT Global Pte Ltd, and Chairman, IES Manufacturing Group.

Exploit Technologies will channel a pipeline of startups from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Technology Transfer network (TTN) to Angel investors during its Angel networking activities.

Mr Boon Swan Foo, Executive Chairman, Exploit Technologies, said: Mr Boon Swan Foo, Executive Chairman, Exploit Technologies, said: “We have seen many Singapore start-ups with great potential for global success. Often, all they need is an experienced mentor who can guide and advise them to avoid the initial pitfalls. We believe Angel investors could plug this current gap in the entrepreneurship ecosystem, through providing mentorship services, coaching for elevator pitches, shaping of business plans, and of course, helping start-ups with their fundraising efforts. I congratulate IES for coming onboard the Angel Investment Management programme. Recently, with signs that the global economy is looking up, we hope that more of such committed individuals and organisations like IES could partner us in paving the way forward for indigenous start-ups.”

Er. Lee Bee Wah, President, IES, said: “AIM is a good model where ‘inventor-meetsinvestor’ and ideas are made a reality. We want to engage our members through the IES Angels Roundtable and enable them to establish networks within the Angels community and pick up interesting investment opportunities along the way.”

The 3rd IES Charles Rudd Distinguished Lecture will be held on Monday 31 August 2009 at 7.00 pm at The Matrix Auditorium at Biopolis, Singapore. Media representatives are invited to cover the event. Please refer to Appendix 2 for the programme.

Singapore, 18 May 2009 – Exploit Technologies and Singapore Manufacturers’ Federation (SMa) will announce at a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony tomorrow that a strategic collaboration will be established under the Exploit Technologies Angel Investment Management initiative (AIM). This collaboration serves to enhance and accelerate Angel investors networking activities; thus enabling start-ups and SMa members to have greater access to Angel investors and updates on technology developments in Singapore and in the region. Second Minister for Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hua is the Guest of Honour at the event.

Under the new partnership, Exploit Technologies and SMa will collaborate to organise Angel networking events and undertake joint marketing activities to promote Angel investments in local start-ups. In addition, Exploit Technologies will continue to channel a pipeline of start-ups from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Technology Transfer Network (TTN) to Angel investors during its angel networking activities such as regular pitching sessions and coordinated luncheons and tea receptions.

Mr Boon Swan Foo, Executive Chairman of Exploit Technologies and Chairman of TTN said, “The recession is likely to have a severe impact on new and small businesses if help was not rendered in time. SMa, as a representative body for the manufacturing community in Singapore, can provide invaluable support to start-ups through its extensive network and its members’ experience in various areas. I congratulate SMa for coming onboard the Angel Investment Management programme to help Singapore start-ups in difficult times like now. We are calling for more committed individuals and organisations to step forward to join us in this quest to nurture homegrown start-ups.”

Under the MOU, SMa will also link up its members who are keen to be Angel investors for these potential start-ups. In addition, Exploit Technologies and SMa may during Networking Events showcase technologies from the A*STAR research institutes to provide an opportunity for SMa members to adopt leading edge technologies to either upgrade their current business operations or to venture into new business areas. .

As the leading association for local manufacturers, SMa has an extensive network of established manufacturers and experienced businessmen who can help to mentor young entrepreneurs by sharing valuable insights, and thereby steering these start-ups into profitable organisations.

Mr Renny Yeo, President of SMa added, “This Angel Investment Management initiative is an excellent platform for our local manufacturers to share industry knowledge and expertise with these start-ups. In addition, some of our more established members can provide the much-needed financial support and valuable mentorship to spur on these entrepreneurs. SMa is encouraging our members to play a pro-active role in redefining the manufacturing landscape in Singapore by innovating through technology and establishing closer working relationships between organizations and new start-ups.”

The AIM initiative was launched by Exploit Technologies on 15 July 2008 to encourage innovation in the Singapore investment landscape and inject new vibrancy into the Singapore economy. It achieves these through facilitating and catalysing Angel investment in start-ups, which will also benefit aspiring entrepreneurs. In particular, AIM encourages Angel networks to be formed through special interest groups and helps Angel investors to gain access to a large pool of Intellectual Property portfolios and start-ups in the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and other partners of the Technology Transfer Network (TTN).

Besides SMa and TTN, the Business Angels Network South East Asia (BANSEA), NTU Alumni Club and HP Alumni also joined AIM on 15 October 2008, 22 December 2008 and 19 February this year respectively. To facilitate the collaboration of joint programmes, Exploit Technologies is now hosting the BANSEA Secretariat at its premise located at Biopolis.

The signing ceremony will take place tomorrow afternoon (19 May 2009) at Biopolis, Singapore. Participating in this ceremony are Mr Boon Swan Foo, Executive Chairman of Exploit Technologies and Chairman of the Technology Transfer Network (TTN); and Mr Renny Yeo, President of SMa. Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Second Minister for Finance and Transport is the Guest of Honour at the event.

Singapore, 11 May 2009 – The Technology Transfer Network (TTN) announced today that its Founding Members will leverage the jointly developed IP Cluster Maps to maximise the potential of translational R&D work that can be funded under the National Research Foundation (NRF) Translational R&D Grants for Polytechnics, one of the initiatives under the National Framework for Innovation and Enterprise. NRF did an Open Grant Call this afternoon at Nanyang Polytechnic.

The TTN, established in February 2008 by eight Founding Members, is a collaborative alliance of technology transfer offices set up to enhance the effectiveness of technology transfer to industry. The core activities of the TTN include IP cluster mapping, training and certification of TTO professionals, joint marketing and events, technology advisory services, industry collaboration, and regular dialogue and sharing of best practices. The eight Founding Members that have contributed to development of the IP Maps include A*STAR Exploit Technologies, Nanyang Polytechnic, Nanyang Technopreneurship Centre, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Management University, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic.

As part of the drive to accelerate translation R&D efforts in research areas of common interests, the Founding Members have over the last year worked together to map out IP Clusters comprising IP Portfolios of the TTN members. These clusters are developed based on their relevance and impact to the industry, as well as to complement the extensive work already underway in each of the Founding Members’ research teams. Through the IP Cluster mapping process, the TTN members are constantly exploring opportunities of collaboration and tapping on synergy in complementary R&D work done.

With the Open Grant Call made by NRF today to fund polytechnics that engage in translation R&D work, the TTN Founding Members are committed to utilise the IP Cluster maps to identify relevant R&D areas that will be good candidates for the competitive fund.

Mr Boon Swan Foo, Executive Chairman of Exploit Technologies and the Chairman of the Technology Transfer Network said, “In the wake of today’s bleak economic outlook, smart investment dollars are flowing into countries and organisations with a strong focus on commercialisation and innovation. The joint efforts by TTN Founding Members in IP Cluster mapping and in working together to develop translational R&D projects with the market in mind is commendable. This move to leverage the TTN IP Cluster maps cannot be more timely; given that Singapore is stepping up on its efforts to help local companies leverage technologies and remain competitive in turbulent times.”

Mr Edward Ho, Dy Principal/Development, Nanyang Polytechnic said, “NYP is happy to contribute to this effort on IP cluster mapping as it offer the chance for the various IHLs to now aggregate their capabilities and core competencies in a productive and concerted manner towards IP commercialization. We are confident that this effort will result in optimum utilization of resources, know-how and experience.”

Sharing his views on the collaboration, Associate Professor Tan Teng Kee, Director of the Nanyang Technopreneurship Center, NTU, said, “Intellectual property cluster mapping is a worthwhile initiative to help bridge the various TTN Founding Members’ R&D efforts. The new relationships forged will also strengthen the effectiveness of technology commercialisation and thereby contribute towards realising the vision of TTN.”

Mr Foo See Meng, Deputy Principal, Ngee Ann Polytechnic said, “IP clusters are important drivers for the competitiveness of Singapore’s innovation and enterprise development. They will facilitate project collaborations among institutions beyond their own strengths and come up jointly with the best expertise available for the work”

Commenting on the collaboration, Mr Yeo Li Pheow, Principal/CEO, Republic Polytechnic said, “The IP Cluster Mapping Initiative provides an excellent platform for the polytechnics, universities and research institutions to pool and leverage on the valuable IP and know-how developed within each institute to develop products and applications with greater impact than what could be achieved if the institutes were to work alone.”

Practice Professor Desai Arcot Narasimhalu, Director of SMU Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Practice Professor, School of Information Systems, SMU said “SMU is very pleased with the progress in IP cluster mapping exercise. This is a good beginning towards building compelling business innovations using IP residing across different founding and other members of TTN. The logical next step is to identify one or two business innovation development projects using IP from a few members to realize the value from the results of the IP cluster mapping exercise. SMU has developed a method for monetizing technology innovations and would be pleased to share this know how with the members of TTN. Another important next step is to develop a commonly agreed upon formula for sharing the revenues from business innovations developed using IP from different members. Such a formula is crucial for building on the success of the IP cluster mapping exercise.”

Mr Tan Hang Cheong, Principal, Singapore Polytechnic said, “TTN will play an important role in the R&D landscape in Singapore. SP is delighted to be one of the founding members of the TTN, comprising A*Star, the universities and polytechnics. The sharing of IP Cluster Maps among the institutions will further strengthen the existing partnerships between these institutions. This initiative will lead to greater collaborations among researchers across institutions and SP is looking forward to work with them to translate our achievements in research to the market place.”

Mr Boo Kheng Hua, Principal and CEO, Temasek Polytechnic said, “Temasek Polytechnic sees the TTN IP Cluster Mapping Initiative as an opportunity to enhance the development of its IP management portfolio and technology transfer procedures, thereby maximizing the commercialization potential of its IP assets. We are looking forward to working closely with all members in carrying out R&D for the benefit of our community”.

Singapore, 18 February 2009 | For immediate release

Singapore, 18 February 2009 ‐ Exploit Technologies and the Hewlett‐Packard (HP) Alumni have announced today at a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony that a strategic collaboration will be established under the Exploit Technologies Angel Investment Management initiative (AIM). This collaboration serves to enhance and accelerate Angel networking activity, and enable startups to have greater access to Angel investors in Singapore and in the region.

Under the new partnership, Exploit Technologies and HP Alumni Angel Networking Group will collaborate to organise Angel networking events and undertake joint marketing activities to promote Angel investments in local startups. In addition, Exploit Technologies will continue to channel a pipeline of startups from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Technology Transfer Network (TTN) to Angel investors during its angel networking activities such as regular pitching sessions and coordinated luncheons and tea receptions.

Mr Boon Swan Foo, Executive Chairman of Exploit Technologies and Chairman of TTN said, “Putting monies into start‐ups that demonstrate good market potential today has provided cautious investors with an excellent investment alternative in this bleak economic climate. Prudent investors who are not prepared to dip into the established markets because of looming uncertainties should look at investing in start‐ups that have no financial baggage; and have real valuation adjusted for market conditions”.

HP Alumni will also link up its members who are keen to be Angel investors with potential startups. Mr Koh Boon Hwee, Chairman of the HP Alumni said, “This collaboration with Exploit Technologies under the Angel Investment Management (AIM) initiative could not be more timely. HP Alumni’s members have a broad range of industry and business expertise. It is our desire that we will be able to provide these networks to the A*STAR and TTN startups. We will certainly be keeping an eye‐out for interesting investment opportunities.”

Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of A*STAR, said, “For startups to succeed, they will need much more than good technology and a good business plan. They will need ready access to funds and committed mentors, who can help guide them in the business world. I am confident that with HP Alumni onboard AIM, startups will be able to tap more effectively on angel investors for both funds and expertise to enhance their chance of success. In the process, we should see a more vibrant innovation and enterprise landscape in Singapore”.

The AIM initiative was launched by Exploit Technologies on 15 July 2008 to encourage innovation in the Singapore investment landscape and inject new vibrancy into the Singapore economy. It achieves these through facilitating and catalysing Angel investment in startups, which will also benefit aspiring
entrepreneurs. In particular, AIM encourages Angel networks to be formed in special interest groups and helps Angel investors to gain access to a large pool of Intellectual Property portfolios and startups in the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and other partners of the Technology Transfer Network (TTN).

Besides HP Alumni and TTN, the Business Angels Network South East Asia (BANSEA) and NTU Alumni Club also joined AIM last year on 15 October and 22 December respectively. To facilitate the collaboration of joint programmes, Exploit Technologies is now hosting the BANSEA Secretariat at its premises located at Biopolis.

The introduction of the IEF is part of TTN’s on-going effort to promote a vibrant eco-system of strategic alliance for angel investors, technology transfer organisations, venture capitals and research institutes.

Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of A*STAR, said, “I would like to extend a warm welcome to the six new members of the TTN. With them onboard, TTN has indeed grown into a global network with members from Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and North America. The ever-widening network allows TTN members to leverage on one another’s experience in various industries and different geographical regions so as to enhance their technology commercialisation and innovation efforts.

“With its base in Singapore, TTN will also give start-ups in Singapore the opportunity of leveraging on TTN’s global network to reach new markets and find new partners.
